Breaking the Sebum Production Cycle
When you wash your hair using a product to dry out your scalp, like an oily scalp shampoo, your scalp will respond by rehydrating that lost moisture. You can’t win chasing this greasy cycle. The more you wash your hair, the more oil your scalp produces, and the bigger your problem becomes. The cycle is ongoing, but you can break it.
Whether your greasy scalp is a temporary or permanent problem in your life, you’ll be happy to know that there are a lot of products and tips that can make your oily scalp much easier to deal with. Here are some tips to help combat your oily hair battle:
- Check Your Shampoo Technique. Make sure you are shampooing your hair properly, which means rinse, cold, rinse.
- You should be rinsing your hair for a minimum of 30 seconds. Use Cold Water instead of warm water. Rinse your hair with cold water after shampooing. Warm water can stimulate the glands that produce sebum, while cold water helps shut them down.
- Limit Use of Hair Dryer. Let your hair dry naturally instead. The hot hair from the hair dryer can stimulate oil production faster.
Aside from those, it’s also important to eat healthy to minimize and prevent hair fall. Consider adding more of these to your diet – carrots, oats, whole grains, brown rice, green leafy vegetables, citrus fruits, lentils, sweet potatoes, pumpkin seeds, oysters, nuts such as walnuts and almonds, fish such as salmon and tuna that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, eggs, beans, yogurt, low-fat cheese. Do not forget to drink plenty of water throughout the day to flush out all harmful toxins from your body.
Using an oily scalp shampoo or doing scalp treatment twice per month also helps clarify the scalp. This prevents product buildup or over-secretion of oil sebum which leads to greasy hair. Use an oily scalp shampoo a couple of times every month to remove all traces of oil.
